What is Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy? Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy is a body-mind practice that draws upon traditional hatha yoga postures, and yogic philosophy and psychology. Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy was founded by Michael Lee, a Kripalu yoga teacher, who observed that mindful attention to bodily sensation and the feelings, thoughts, memories or images that coincide with these sensations could bring about a release from held tensions, traumas, beliefs and self-perceptions. The result of this kind of awareness practice was the potential for creative life change, greater peacefulness and life satisfaction, and deeper relaxation. In a private session, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy includes dialogue as well as postures. In a private session you are assisted in holding postures for longer periods of time so that you can take time to become aware of and explore any thoughts, feelings, memories, images or sensations that may also be present. It is always your choice whether or not to speak about something you become aware of. In a Phoenix Rising Yoga class you are guided into postures with the use of body cues rather than the names of postures so that you can experience the posture as coming from your body. This approach requires giving yourself the time and attention that is necessary to connect with your own unique physical edges and conditions. When you allow your body the room to find its own way into a pose and to be in a pose, you can then settle into being present to observe and become aware of other qualities of experience that may also be present. Repeated experience with this process can lead to deeper levels of self-awareness, acceptance, and life change.
Phoenix Rising Yoga is hatha yoga. All the benefits of hatha yoga are there. Such as: strengthening, stretching, balancing, opening and enlarging the respiratory system, cleared vitality (prana), reduced stress, higher consciousness and potential relaxation.
